How Gunmen Killed Female Police Officer In Akwa Ibom – Police
Some gunmen on motorcycles have ambushed and killed a female police officer in Akwa Ibom.
The incident took place on Tuesday in Ika Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.
The police spokesperson in the state, Odiko MacDon, confirmed the killing which appeared to be a continuation of the attack against security agents in the country’s South-east and South-south regions.
Mr MacDon identified the slain police officer as Esther Akpan, a police corporal.
She was killed alongside a police special constabulary, Isonuyo Paul.
“On 27/4/2021, at about 7:00 p.m., some armed men on motorcycles heading towards Ika Divisional Headquarters vicinity, armed with AK-47 and other dangerous weapons with the intent to attack the Division and set it ablaze met stiff resistance as the Divisional Police Officer and other officers on ground fought gallantly and repelled the attackers who took to their heels with possible bullet wounds,” Mr MacDon, a superintendent of police, said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, before heading towards the Station to attack it, they ambushed and killed a Woman Police Corporal, Esther Akpan who had just closed from duty and was on her way home in company of a Police Special Constabulary, Isonuyo Effiong Paul,” he added.
A patrol vehicle belonging to the local police station was set ablaze by the gunmen, the police spokesperson said.
The police said they had launched an investigation into the attack.
Apart from Ika, there have been incidents of such attacks on police and soldiers in Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state recently.

A widow, Mrs Queeneth Alozie has been reportedly slaughtered in Abia state.
She was a retired nurse at the Federal Medical Centre FMC Umuahia.
According to reports, she was allegedly slaughtered on Sunday morning, April 25, by yet-to be identified assailants.
The Abia State Police Command has now launched manhunt for her fleeing gateman.
Until her death, Mrs Alozie was the wife of a late Dr. Alozie from Isingwu Umuahia, the owner of the popular Obioma Hospital at School Road Umuahia.
She was living alone in their mansion opposite the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia, BCA as the children are all based abroad.
It was gathered that the slain widow had recently employed the fleeing gateman from her maternal home in Mbaise.
According to reports, the older security man returned from church on that fateful day and attempted to enter the compound but the gate was locked from behind.
“I called his (gateman’s) phone number many times and his line was switched off. I then called that of my madam, there was also no response”, he said.
The older security guard alerted neigbours who broke into the compound through the back door and discovered the widow in the pool of her blood. She was said to have sustained an axe cut on the head.
Spokesperson of the command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday, said investigations were on to unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives of Abia State, have staged a protest over the gruesome killing of her member.
Carrying placards with inscriptions like, “those involved in this wicked act will not go free, Our Lives are under threat, today it is Queeneth, Who knows whom it may be tomorrow” the nurses called on the government and security agents to fish out the perpetrator of the crime for justice to prevail.
Speaking to journalists during the protest on Tuesday, the state Chairman, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Comrade Ugochi Akoma described the murder as barbaric.
On her part, the unit Chairman, FMC, Mrs Stella Onwumah, called on the state government to ensure that Heath workers are protected even in the discharge their duties.
The leadership of the Association advised nurses, midwives and other health workers to be security conscious both at home and work places.
Many Doctors Are Fleeing Borno State – NMA President, Prof Innocent Ujah
Prof. Innocent Ujah, the National President of the Nigerian Medical Association, has lamented about the high rate of insecurity in Borno state which is making health practitioners run for their lives.
Ujah said this when he led other national officials of the association on a courtesy call to the Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, who is also the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, at the Rayfield Government House in Jos, on Tuesday, April 27.
“What is happening in the country in terms of insecurity is very disturbing to us as doctors. A few days ago, a doctor was killed in Kaduna. People are being killed and abducted. I don’t know what would have happened if any of my children were kidnapped, maybe I would have died by now.
Anybody whose families are abducted; the ones who are rescued are already hypertensive and may likely die of stroke very quickly. So, it is not just a social component, but a health issue.
The truth is that a lot of doctors, nurses and other health personnel have moved away from Borno State and other places because of insecurity. We need solution to this problem.” he said.
