National leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has proposed a seven-point agenda, which he said would revive the country’s troubled economy and drastically reduce its dependence on petro-dollars.
The APC presidential aspirant said his desire to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari is to further improve the nation’s economy to the benefit of all Nigerians, including generations unborn.
The former governor of Lagos noted that lack of electricity was perhaps the single greatest impediment to the country’s economic advancement, adding that the lack of power inflates costs, undercuts productivity, causing havoc to overall economic activity and job creation.
“Our economic situation is literally and figuratively in the dark. The hurdles we face are not technical in nature. We must convince those political and economic factors currently impeding our quest for reliable power to step aside so that we may obtain this critical ingredient to economic vitality,” he said.
He said Nigeria must realise that no populous nation has ever attained broadly-shared prosperity without first creating an industrial capacity that employs large numbers of people and manufactures a significant quantity of goods for domestic consumption or export.
According to him, “England, America and China had implemented policies to protect key industries, promote employment and encourage exports, explaining that these countries represent the past, present and immediate future of national economic achievement.
“A strong, common trend is their policies of buffering strategic industries in ways that allow for the expansion and growth of the overall economy.
“So, we must press forward with a national industrial policy fostering the development of strategic industries that create jobs as well as spur further economic growth.”
“Whether we decide to focus attention on steel, textiles, cars, machinery components, or other items, we must focus on manufacturing things that Nigerians and the rest of the world value and want to buy. We must partially reshape the marketplace to accomplish this.”
The presidential hopeful also proposed the need for the Federal Government to develop a policy of tax credits, subsidies that insulate critical sectors from the negative impact of imports.
He recommended a national infrastructure plan, noting that roads, ports, bridges and railways needed enhancing, and new ones need to be built with the goal being to develop a coherently planned and integrated infrastructural grid.
He said: “A national economy cannot grow beyond the capacity of the infrastructure that serves it. Good infrastructure yields a prospering economy. Weak infrastructure relegates the economy to the poorhouse. The government must take the lead. The focus on infrastructure has important corollary benefits.
“Federal expenditure for needed infrastructure spending has empirically proven in every place and in every era to boost recessionary economies and provide employment when sorely needed.
“Deficit spending in our own currency to advance this mission is neither a luxury nor a mistake. It is a fulcrum of balanced and shared prosperity. We must overcome the economic, political and bureaucratic bottlenecks preventing us from achieving reliable electrical power.”
Tinubu also proposed a credit-based economy, stating that credit for business investment was too costly in Nigeria. “The long-term economic strength of the nation is dependent on how we deploy idle men, material and machines into productive endeavors. And this is highly dependent on the interest rate,” he said.
He asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to purge itself of inordinate affection for high-interest rates, saying, lower rates were required for industrialists to borrow without fear that excessive costs of borrowing would consign them to irredeemable debts.
An Ukrainian official has invited President Joe Biden to visit Kyiv next week amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of the country, saying ‘one should not be afraid to – if you are brave.’
Ihor Zhovka, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief diplomatic adviser, has asked America’s commander-in-chief to visit Ukraine in person when he travels to Brussels for a NATO summit next week
Zhovka has requested that Biden facilitate Ukraine’s upcoming acquisition of U.S. weapons, which include fighter jets and missiles.
The adviser also slammed Ukraine’s allies, alleging Zelensky is ‘disappointed’ in the U.S. and NATO’s apparent rejection to fulfill the nation’s request to impose a no-fly zone over its airspace.
‘If NATO is not able to provide us with a humanitarian no-fly zone, please provide us with fighter jets, please provide us with anti-missile air defense systems,’ Zhovka said during a CNN interview, Mediaite reported. ‘So, my president will keep doing this. He spoke about this in the U.S. Congress. He’s talking about this on a daily basis.’
Biden, who has not publicly issued a decision on Zelensky’s request, was warned earlier this week that imposing the no-fly zone would be an ‘act of war’. It remains unclear how Biden will proceed.
Zhovka also noted how leaders of three other nations have visited Kyiv and met with Zelensky.
‘Well, you know, just this week, three prime ministers of three friendly nations – Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovenia – visited, personally, Kyiv, and they met personally with President Zelensky,’ he responded.
‘So why [doesn’t] President Biden come to Ukraine to meet with the president?’
When questioned about the danger of Biden traveling to Kyiv, Zhovka said: ‘Well, definitely it is dangerous when you have a war against my country, a war in Europe.’
It is unclear if Biden will accept Zhovka and Zelensky’s invitation, which comes as Ukraine is set to receive a new shipment of U.S. weapons within days, including javelin and stinger missiles.

Guardiola’s side will look to reach the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday when they travel to Southampton for their last eight tie.

The country’s Interfax news agency said it was the first time the weapons system has been deployed since troops were first sent across the border on February 24.
Defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told a briefing that the underground depot hit on Friday housed Ukrainian missiles and aircraft ammunition, according to a recording of the briefing shared by Russian news agencies.The Reuters news agency said it was unable to independently verify Konashenkov’s statements.
The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Russia prides itself on its advanced weaponry, and President Vladimir Putin said in December that Russia was the global leader in hypersonic missiles, whose speed, manoeuvrability and altitude make them difficult to track and intercept.
Hypersonic missiles are able to travel five times faster than the speed of sound, at speeds above Mach 5 – or 3,800 mph. The Kinzhal missiles are part of an array of weapons unveiled in 2018, when Putin hailed them as ‘invincible’.
Konashenkov added on Saturday that Russian forces had also destroyed military radio and reconnaissance centres near the Ukrainian port city of Odessa using the Bastion coastal missile system. Having been deemed almost surplus to requirements by Frank Lampard, Rudiger has been the main benificiary of Chelsea’s decision to replace the club legend with Thomas Tuchel.

A 6ft 9in tall Russian woman who holds the title for being the ‘tallest model in the world’ has opened up about her dating struggles.
Ekaterina Lisina once snapped up the Guinness World Record for having the “world’s longest legs”, measuring in at 4ft 3in.
And, the Russian athlete-turned-model has even enjoyed a successful professional basketball career, winning bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games before retiring from the sport.
But, speaking to former porn star Alexis Texas on her Private Talks podcast, the model opened up about her romantic life and admitted that her height often causes conflict when she’s trying to find a partner.
Ekaterina’s father is 6ft 6in, while her mother is 6ft 2in.
The model explained she was anxious when she discovered that she might also be lofty too.
“I was afraid because I know how kids and people generally react to height, and it’s not good,” she remembered.
And, as she grew older, Ekaterina’s height also began to play an unhelpful role in her romantic life.
“You know those problems when you like a boy but he’s much shorter, or you like a tall boy but he doesn’t want to be with you because you are too tall for him,” she explained.
But, given the fact that the average man is reported to stand at 5ft 9ins – a foot shorter than the model – Ekaterina accepted that she’d had to make some compromises when determining her dating boundaries.
“Probably 5ft 7in,” she revealed. “That’s the limit.”
Asked by Alexis whether she’d ever been with anyone shorter than that, Ekaterina responded: “No, I think it’s already really low for me.
“The difference is over one foot; a lot of girls can’t even handle a couple of centimetres’ difference and this is one foot.”
The model added: “Height shouldn’t matter in the relationship, it shouldn’t be the most important thing.”
Despite setting this boundary, Ekaterina admitted that she’d predominantly been dating men of a similar height while describing some of her requirements for a partner.
“He should definitely care about me… Giving his attention, support financially if he can,” she said.
“But I think the most important thing is chemistry, and a spiritual connection… If there is no spiritual connection and even if you like how the person looks it is not going to work anyway.”
When she initially moved to LA from her home country, Ekaterina admitted that she struggled to adapt to the new type of man she encountered, and disliked dating apps.
“I’m not a party person, I’m not a person who likes to go out,” she confessed. “I can’t say I met many people so I had to use a dating app because I don’t like to go out.”
